“Like and “Friends” Quantity or Quality??? …….that is the question!

This debate has been going on for years now, which is more important, the number of people that “like” your page or “follow” you or the quality of engagement you have with each of those that do? In the sales world no matter if you were selling widgets, gidgets or gadgets the goal in the past was to get in front of as many people as possible. To the point of having formulas to help figure out how people contacts you had to have to reach a certain sales goal. Example 100 leads, gave you 30 appointments, 30 appoints lead to 20 face to face meetings and depending on your closing rate, 5 to 7 deals. I have always hated that type of system! Those were just numbers, it didn’t take into account the relationship built with each contact. I always wanted to make my contacts with people a value to them. Why just touch 100 people when I could embrace 50, build a better rapport, reach the same sales goal, have a better referral rate and retain that client/customer for a lifetime of spending.
Here at Tangram Media when working with our clients customizing their on-line solutions we ask, What are your company’s Social Media goals? Are you looking to spread your brand recognition, retain existing customers, gain referrals or
generate new leads? More and more companies are finding it’s better to have a smaller number of “Likes” and ”followers” that are more engaged then to have huge numbers of them that just sit there. People buy stuff that their friends are buying so the more you connect with the first customer the better the chances of them “Liking” or “Sharing” your product, brand or Company. And if they do, the better the chances of their friends doing the same. This is why Facebook’s Sponsored Ads work so well. It uses the fact that a person has “liked” or “shared” your content and targets their friends specifically with that activity. Also the new insights feature “Friends of Fans” gives you a broad new outlook on the reach you potentially have if you keep your fans engaged. The new people “are talking about” number gives you great feedback about how many people are liking and sharing your page and content. A number of “are talking about” that is higher then your “likes” means you have hit the jackpot!

Now how do you build those numbers? I would start slowly and build that relationship with each and then over time add more numbers. Start with your advocates, those people that share your love for your service or product. Get them and keep them involved. They are your cheerleaders so ask them to “like” and reply to your comments, “share” your content and add more posts to your page. As they “like” and “share” more and more people will join in, stay engaged with them, make them feel at home. Soon, before you know it you will reach the tipping point and it will explode.
So I guess what I’m getting at is the fact that you have to decide what your goal is and work from there. Knowing that will determine which direction you want to go. Keep in mind that social media is suppose to be social so make it so that when your 2 friends, tell their 2 friends, they tell their 2 friends and so on and so on!!!!!

The Steve Jobs Effect

The Internet is awash with people expressing their thoughts on the passing of Steve Jobs. So much so, that I thought we really didn’t need to add anything to what has been said already. Yet, the more I thought about it the more compelled I was to contribute my own thoughts.

At Tangram Media, we are a full Apple experience from iMacs, Macbook Airs, iPads, to iPhones. Personally, I have been a Mac user since 2004. In late 2003 I was helping a friend at one of his startup companies in Indianapolis. A few months after the office had opened it was broken into and all of the computers were stolen (including a vintage Apple Newton). So, one of the business partners, Jeff, convinced my friend that they should replace all their Windows computers with Macs. A week later a collection of iMacs and iBook G4s arrived in the office. I helped setup the iBook’s which were running OS 10.3 Panther at the time. The Apple interface was so polished, aesthetically beautiful, and the iBook was pretty snappy – I was hooked. Shortly after that I went out and purchased an iBook G4 that I still have to this day.

The first few weeks of my Mac life were difficult and frustrating while I re-wired my brain to think the “Apple way”, but since then it’s been pretty smooth and progressively more rewarding with each iteration of the hardware. I fully suspect that one day I will plug in my iPhone to an external monitor and keyboard and THAT will be my computer. Steve Jobs, despite no longer being with us, will continue to effect how we interact with technology for years to come.

I’ll end with two things. First, a quote that I think represents what we are trying to do here at Tangram Media:

“My model for business is The Beatles. They were four guys that kept each other’s negative tendencies in check. They balanced each other. And the total was greater than the sum of the parts. Great things in business are not done by one person, they are done by a team of people.”

Second, Steve Job’s 2005 Stanford University Commencement Speech. One of the better speeches I have ever read, I highly recommend you take a few minutes and read it.

The new Facebook – the changes you need to know about

As we predicted, Mark Zuckerberg’s keynote at the f8 conferencein San Francisco Thursday introduced some of the most profound changes seen on Facebook since its inception. So many changes, in fact, that it can be hard to keep track. So here’s a handy-dandy guide.

1. You’re going to get a Timeline — a scrapbook of your life. In a complete overhaul of its ever-evolving profile page, Facebook is introducing Timeline. This is a stream of information about you — the photos you’ve posted, all your status updates, the apps you’ve used, even the places you’ve visited on a world map — that scrolls all the way back to your birth. It encourages you to post more stuff about your past, such as baby pictures, using Facebook as a scrapbook.

The further back in Timeline you go, the more Facebook will compress the information so that you’re only seeing the most interesting parts of your history. You can customize this by clicking on a star next to a status, say, or enlarging a picture.

Timeline is in beta now, and will be opt-in to start. In the long run, it will become the new default profile page.

2. You don’t have to just Like something — now you can [verb] any [noun]. Remember when all you could do to something on Facebook — a video, a comment, a product, a person — was Like it? Pretty soon that’s going to seem laughably antiquated. The social network has launched Facebook Gestures, which means that Facebook’s partners and developers can turn any verb into a button.

So you’ll start seeing the option to tell the world you’re Reading a particular book, for example, or Watching a given movie, or Listening to a certain tune. In turn, as many observers have pointed out, this is likely to lead to an explosion of oversharing — and far more information on your friends’ activities showing up in your news feed than you probably cared to know.

3. Facebook apps need only ask permission once to share stories on your behalf. Although not as big a deal as the Timeline, this tweak may be one of the more controversial. Previously, apps had to ask every time they shared information about you in your profile. Now, the first time you authorize the app, it will tell you what it’s going to share about you. If you’re cool with that, the app never has to ask you again.

But you don’t have to worry about this app stuff clogging your news feed, because …

4. All “lightweight” information is going to the Ticker. Status updates, photos from a wedding or a vacation, changes in relationship status: these are the kinds of things you want to see from your friends when you look at your news feed. Who killed whom in Mafia Wars? Who planted what in FarmVille? Not so much. So that kind of trivial detail has been banished to the Ticker, a real-time list of things your friends are posting now that scrolls down the side of your screen.

5. You can watch TV and movies, listen to music, and read news with your friends — all within Facebook. Starting today, thanks to a whole bunch of partnerships, there are a lot more things you can do without ever having to leave Facebook. You can watch a show on Hulu, listen to a song on Spotify, or check out a story on Yahoo News (or Mashable, via the Washington Post‘s Social Read app). The ticker will tell you what your friends are watching, listening to or reading, allowing you to share the experience with them by clicking on a link.

The upshot: a brand-new kind of media-based peer pressure. On stage, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings — a launch partner — revealed that he had only just decided to watch Breaking Bad because Facebook’s Ticker told him a colleague was watching it. Netflix’s own algorithm had been recommending the show to him for years, but that was never reason enough for Hastings.

6. Facebook has more users and more engagement than ever. We got two interesting nuggets of information out of Zuckerberg (and the Zuckerberg-impersonating Andy Samberg): Facebook has hit 800 million users, and most of them are active. The social network just saw a new record for the most visitors in one day: an eye-popping 500 million.

Indeed, the whole impression left by the event was that of a confident, fast-evolving company that is becoming ever more professional, and Zuckerberg’s stage show bore more than a little resemblance to an Apple keynote. It’s going to be interesting to see what Google+ can do to keep up.

Facebook: Sort your Friends with “smart lists”

Facebook has introduced “smart lists” that automatically sort friends into categories and prioritise news from those dearest to members of the world’s largest online social network.

The rollout of smart lists commences on Thursday and comes as rival Google+ seeks to win over users by providing sharing in “circles” that mirror real-world social groups such as family, friends, and co-workers.

“This is really something we have been working on for four years,” Facebook director of product management Blake Ross said as he gave AFP a preview of smart lists.

“We think this is the way people will make lists going forward,” he continued.

Facebook began in 2007 letting members individually sort friends into lists for targeted sharing of comments, photos and other digitised snippets of life.

The smart lists feature spares Facebook users the tedium of creating lists by automatically putting friends into groups, with the first four categories being work, school, family and city.

“It is silly for you to spend a Saturday afternoon categorising your friends on Facebook,” Ross said. “We want to make it as easy as possible to organise your friends.”

Smart lists are created and updated based on information people consent to share with friends on Facebook, according to Ross.

“Smart lists take all the pain out of organising friends on Facebook,” Ross said, noting that the feature was optional. “You can always add to or remove people from a smart list after Facebook makes a recommendation.”

Smart lists start out by mining profiles of friends to figure out details such as ages or colleges attended to create lists of likely current or former classmates.

The city category will categorise by designated regions, since friends who live near one another might reside in different towns.

Facebook will also let each member create a list of people who are “closer to them than anyone else in the world,” according to Ross.

News from friends in that list is given high-priority delivery.

People can also get separate Facebook news feeds based on lists.

“I think my friends love me, but I don’t know if they want to hear about my baby every time it takes another step,” Ross said.

“This lets people take slices of life and share them with different audiences,” he continued.

Facebook will also let members list “acquaintances” whose posts they don’t want to see very often.

“Facebook is used by more than 750 million people worldwide, and just like in the real world you are friends with a diverse group of people,” Blake said.

“We heard from users that it is hard to talk to all these people at one time, and maybe harder to hear from them at one time,” he added.

Facebook last month announced other improvements aimed at letting users be more selective about who gets to see what they post at the social network.

The moves follow the successful launch of an online social network by internet titan Google. Google+ social network has won legions of fans by allowing people to share content based on which “circles” friends fall into.

Google is a latecomer to social networking but its new site, Google+, has grown rapidly to more than 10 million members since its launch on June 28 although questions have been raised recently as to how active its users are.

In unveiling Google+, Google stressed the ability it gives users to separate online friends and family into different “Circles,” or networks, and to share information only with members of a particular circle.

One of the criticisms of Facebook has been that updates are shared with all of one’s friends unless a user has gone through a relatively complicated process to create separate Facebook Groups.

While Google+ may be the fastest-growing social network ever, it remains to be seen whether it can pose a serious threat to the social networking titan Facebook.

Google has a billion users worldwide that could be drawn into the California-based internet giant’s social network.

The “Officer Ludwig” Experience, Emotions run high

The “Officer Ludwig” Experience
Unbeknownst to his large family, Retired Metro Transit Police Officer P.F. Ludwig had been waging a battle with his former department over his medical disability pension for almost 4 years. He had his pension reduced to less then a third of his original pension which forced him and his wife to file bankruptcy and forced them to move in with one of his son’s families after having his dream home in the mountains foreclosed on. In May of 2010 he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and the fight of his life began!
Towards the waining days of his battle for life, his middle son and his grandson get the idea to start a Facebook page to help spread the word of his battle against his former employer, his fight against cancer and the love for is family.
Over the course of the next few weeks I will show you how connecting with people from all walks of life from all parts of the world can be done through the use of Facebook, videos and Blogs. Social media is ALL about the connection and relationships you build and if done correctly they can have a major impact on you, no matter if it is for personal or business use.

Emotional Connection and Content
It’s not just good enough to have content, there has to be an emotional connection made with the reader/viewer. Otherwise it will sound like the adult voices on the Charlie Brown cartoons. Waaawaaawwannt Waa waaaa waannn, waaaan waaaa ! And having that will certainly not keep people engaged.
There where several emotional connections that were able to be made with Officer Ludwig. Obviously with his family, he came from a huge family, 2 bothers and 8 sisters (all of which are all very emotional!) 3 sons with wives and 7 grandchildren. Then there are the 58 nephews and nieces and their 75 children. That’s a large fan base just to start with and when they shared the story with Facebook friends it went viral fast.
But there were several other groups that had an emotional connection, Cancer survivors, folks that were fighting their own battle with the disease and families of cancer victims. Then there was the Thin Blue Line. The battle with the Police Dept over the pension struck home with lots and lots of Officers from across the country. And if you mess with one, you mess with us all! I will cover how we connected with them latter.
One very obvious thing you will gather when you go to his Facebook page and read back through the posts. We engaged, we were active and we made him a person. You saw the love, the warmth, the humor, the determination he had to win. You could not help but feel like you were a part of this family. A year and half after his death we are still getting posts from people that say they felt like they knew him, felt like a part of the family and they even call themselves “Honorary Ludwigs”. In just 48 hrs,we went from 50 or so friends to 20,000! And by the time he passed away 3 days latter we had close to 200,000!
Having an emotional connection with your followers, engaging them and making them feel like part of your family, will open the doors for so many possibilities later down the road, you can not afford not too.

Details Matter

The label from my tailored suit jacket

If you are a guy like me you probably have several shirts hanging up in your closet right now on thin plastic hangers that your wife bought some time ago on a trip to Wal-Mart. Maybe you are also like me and have the occasional need for a suit or sport coat. What kind of hanger do you have your suits hanging on? Do you have to run to your closet and check? Do you even care? Don’t worry I am right there with you. That is, I was until a few days ago. Then I came across this blog post which explained that without a properly shaped suit or sport coat hanger your suits and sport coats would over time buckle and ripple in the sleeves and the collar would stretch or flatten. In other words, a cheap, thin plastic hanger – over time – could permanently damage your suit or sport coats. Who knew?

After reading this I thought I better double check my closet. Thankfully, the sport jackets in my closet were on a proper wide wishbone hanger, but to my surprise my custom tailored suit was not. It was hanging on a thin plastic hanger and was clearly showing the signs of damage because of it. Cheap thin plastic hangers from Wal-Mart? Actually no. The suit has been hanging on the very hanger that it was delivered to me on by the tailor shop that made the suit.

When I was searching for a tailor to make me a suit I ended up selecting a well-known, established tailor with a proven track record (including the obligatory signed photos of famous patrons in their shop). Yet, here I was staring at my tailored suit sitting on a cheap, thin, plastic hanger with my tailors label on it. How could this be? How could they miss such a simple thing that could have such a huge impact in the life of their product? I can only guess that they did so to save money. Yet, what message is it sending to their customers? It told me that they really didn’t care about their work or for that matter their customers’ long-term satisfaction with their product. At the very least they could have told me about the need to switch out the hanger when I got home (maybe even a coupon code for a suit hanger from the Hanger Project).

What message are you sending your customers? Sometimes it’s the littlest details that your customers will notice about you and your products. It may seem insignificant to your bottom-line, but look at this tailor’s seemingly insignificant cost-cutting decision. The savings of a $15 hanger just cost them several hundred dollars in additional business and potentially more over the life of their relationship with me. Plus, they get the added bonus of never getting a referral from me. Doesn’t seem worth the savings of a $15 hanger does it?

Bottom line:
It takes more than just a great product and a great price to stay competitive in today’s marketplace. The details could mean the difference between having a mediocre business and a truly successful one.

Football and WordPress Blogs

Football and WordPress Blogs

To be honest: Not too long ago, neither of these two terms did mean anything to me. Coming from Germany I grew up with soccer and although my husband and my sons are dedicated Football fans it has never occurred to me that this All American sport could ever win my heart. And when my husband told me about WordPress Blogs as a possible and less expensive alternative to a website I thought of it as something I would never be dealing with.

Well, today I can frankly admit that I got it wrong all along. Not only do I find Football to be an extremely interesting and fascinating sport, I also think that WordPress Blogs are a great idea for non-profit clubs and organizations to get a successful and inexpensive presence on the web.

You may legitimately ask me: What made you change your mind? Well, for Football the answer is easy. A good friend of mine is a Football mom and a Pinecrest Patriots Booster Club member. When she took me to my first live Football game ever, I was not only thrilled by the tactics, the complexity and the speed of the game I was also touched by watching people listening to the National Anthem and showing their national pride. Even today, this still sends shivers up my spine.

The more I learned about the Pinecrest Patriots and all the efforts that are put into this enterprise by players, coaches, parents and volunteers the more I wanted to be part of this great experience. But how? Since Tangram Media Inc. provides (among other online business solutions) websites I offered the Patriots to “create” a page within the Moore County Schools website system. With the success of the team and me getting more and more experienced and feeling more and more comfortable we “outgrew” the school page and decided to get our own domain name: www.pcpatriotsfootball.com.

And guess what? This website is based on a WordPress Blog and has done more than just fulfilling its purpose. It not only allows me to post news, events, game schedules and scores, I’m also adding pictures and links, introducing players and coaches and honoring sponsors and volunteers. Not to mention interacting with fans. On top, with “Google Analytics” I’m able to constantly check the site traffic and to get updated reports on how many people visited the site, when, how long they stayed on which page and if they are returning visitors or new to the site. Since the template didn’t cost anything and the hosting price was a bargain this WordPress Blog website is a success story in itself. Getting the site up and running required some extra efforts but with the help files and videos provided by WordPress Blog everybody can do it.

Most probably you will find me at the next Patriots’ home game and later that same night on my Mac updating “my” WordPress Blog site  … hopefully adding another win.

Go Patriots go!

#Epicfail

Things have been pretty busy here at Tangram Media with the the launch of our new business model and moving to our new offices. While organizing some files from the move I found some notes I made from the Netflix outage that occurred in July. Despite it being a month ago I thought it was still worth posting. Here’s my notes:

According to the Huffington Post the outage occurred at 5pm EST on Sunday the 17th of July, and Netflix acknowledged the problem at 12:30am EST Monday morning. It took Netflix seven and a half hours to respond to their customers. Customers that had seven and a half hours to comment, many of them negatively, about Netflix in the social sphere.

A reminder that having an engagement strategy with your customers is worthless if you don’t actually use it. It’s definitely a bad thing when you don’t bother to use it when your customers are having issues with your service. It’s a really bad thing when you just pulled a 60% rate hike on them.

I thought this Netflix user’s tweet pretty much summed it up in 140 characters or less:

How to Make a Website Successful

When doing business on the Internet, there are many ways in which you can make a website successful. Although the look is important, fancy websites don’t make sales.

There is much more to creating a quality website. To make it successful, you must create a website that will be of interest to your target market and make them want to visit it over and over again. In addition, it should lead your visitors to take the action you desire, such as joining your mailing list, or making a purchase.

Selecting a Website’s Niche
The first step toward how to make a website successful, will be to target it for one specific niche. For example, if you are designing a website about wine, everything within it should relate to wine.

Selecting a Website’s Keyword Phrase
You must also select the most relevant keyword phrase for each webpage. A keyword phrase is two or more words that best describe your webpage. For example, if your webpage is about ‘making wine,’ your best keyword phrase would be ‘wine making.’ You should use your keyword phrase a few times within your webpage, as this will enable the search engines to determine what the website is about. This is a very important step to make a website successful.
Using HTML Heading Tags
When you begin writing your content, it is very important that you use the HTML H1 heading tag with your main title at the top of your webpage. In addition, use th HTML H2 tags for your sub-titles. This is very important, as some search engines place relevance on the text displayed with heading tags.

As the default text for the H1 heading tag is very large, you may want to use CSS style sheets to display the heading tags in the font style and size you prefer.

Using META Tags Within a Webpage

Another step to help make a website successful is to include META tags between the HEAD tags of your webpage. META tags help the search engines to know what keywords are relevant to the webpage. They are also used to tell the search engines what the webpage is about. Many search engines will display this description within the search results.

Backgrounds and Text
It is always best to display a webpage with a white background and black text, as this will make the text easy to read. Distracting backgrounds will make the text hard to read. A good rule of thumb is to just use common sense and keep it simple. This alone is a great way to help make a website successful.

Animated Graphics
If you’re using animated graphics, it is important that you use them sparingly. Graphics that continually flash are VERY annoying and may prevent your visitors from returning to your website in the future.

Navigational Links
It is very important to include good navigational links on every page. They should be displayed at the top, bottom, left or right side of your webpage. In addition, your visitors should be able to get to any webpage within your website within four clicks.

Webpage Layout
Always be consistent with your design. This is a very important step to help make a website successful. The layout for should be the same on each page. If you make it different, your visitors will become confused. In addition, it will make your website appear to be unprofessional. Your design should include the same layout, logo, and navigation setup on each page.

Spelling and Grammar
Always make sure you proof read and spell check your webpages for errors. It is also very important that it doesn’t have any broken images or links.
Important Webpages
When you launch your website, it is very important that you include the following webpages:

About
The ‘About’ page is used to tell your visitors about you and/or your company.

Privacy
The ‘Privacy’ page is used to let your visitors know what you do with their personal information, such as their email address.

Terms and Conditions
The ‘Terms and Conditions’ page should be displayed on your website for your protection.

Site Map
A ‘Site Map’ is used to help the search engines index your website more easily.

You can learn more about all of these pages by doing a search through your favorite search engine. They are very important and will help make a website successful.

Website Interactivity
Another way to make a website successful is to make it interactive. This can be done by including a targeted forum that compliments your website, a form in which they can subscribe to an ezine, a feedback form to enable them to give their opinion, or an informative blog in which visitors can comment.

Web Browsers and Screen Resolutions
When you begin designing your webpage, it is HIGHLY recommended that you install the most popular web browsers on your computer. This will enable you to see how your website will display in different browsers. You will find that it looks great in one browser and terrible in another. It would be wise to design your website to display properly in Firefox and then it should display properly in Internet Explorer, Opera, etc.

It is also important that you view your website through different screen resolutions. You can either open your webpage in your browser and then change your computer’s screen resolution, or there are resources online that you can visit, such as Any Browser, to test your website.

If you follow these simple guidelines, you can begin to make a website successful in no time.
